Spruce cone fly

Strobilomyia melania

Description

The spruce cone fly (Strobilomyia melania) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Anthomyiidae. This insect is a significant pest in conifer forests, specifically targeting the reproductive structures of spruce trees, which causes substantial losses in both natural regeneration and commercial seed production.

The primary host for this species is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). Strobilomyia melania thrives in areas where spruce stands produce high quantities of cones, as the availability of high-quality food resources supports rapid population growth and contributes to recurring infestations over several years.

The life cycle of the fly is synchronized with the development of the host tree's cones. Adult flies emerge in spring, coinciding with the flowering period of spruce. Females lay eggs on young cones; the emerging larvae bore into the cone to consume the developing seeds and the central axis, which disrupts the growth and maturation of the seed crop.

Damaged cones typically show signs of deformation, stunted growth, and premature browning. Resinous lesions often appear on the exterior where larvae have penetrated the tissue. The internal damage is severe, as the larvae feed extensively on seeds, frequently destroying the majority of the potential seed harvest within a single infested cone.

  • Regular monitoring of adult fly emergence using sticky or pheromone traps.
  • Application of targeted insecticides during the early stages of cone development.
  • Early harvesting of infested cones to prevent the larvae from exiting and pupating in the soil.
  • Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids that attack the fly larvae in the forest.

Effective management of Strobilomyia melania requires integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Because larvae are protected inside the cone for most of their development, timing chemical interventions to target the adult stage is critical for minimizing economic damage in seed orchards and nurseries.
