Description

Styela is a genus of sea squirts belonging to the phylum Chordata. While not an agricultural pest in the terrestrial sense, it is classified as a significant biological pest in aquaculture, where it causes severe economic losses by colonizing shellfish farms, particularly mussel and oyster beds.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Stolidobranchia and the family Styelidae. The most notorious species is Styela clava, which has become a major invasive species globally, primarily spread through international maritime traffic as it attaches itself to ship hulls.

The biology and lifecycle of Styela involve a planktonic larval stage followed by a sedentary adult stage. Once attached to a substrate, they develop a tough outer tunic that protects them from environmental stressors. Their rapid colonization ability allows them to outcompete native species and dominate artificial substrates like farming cages.

The damage caused by Styela is primarily defined as biofouling. Their massive growth competes with cultured shellfish for phytoplankton and space. Furthermore, the sheer weight of these colonies on harvesting gear and aquaculture ropes can lead to structural failure, reduced water flow, and hypoxia-related mortality of the farmed product.

Control measures are essential for maintaining farm productivity and include several key approaches:

  • Mechanical removal through regular cleaning of cages and ropes.
  • Monitoring larval settlement patterns to time harvest or maintenance.
  • Applying anti-fouling coatings to infrastructure.
  • Strict biosecurity protocols for equipment transfers between sites.
Biological control and chemical treatments are currently under investigation to reduce the impact of these organisms without harming the cultured stocks.
