Systematic position: Suberites domuncula belongs to the phylum Porifera, class Demospongiae, order Suberitida, and family Suberitidae. This marine sponge is widely known for its symbiotic relationship with hermit crabs, often encrusting the gastropod shells occupied by the crustaceans.
It must be clarified that Suberites domuncula is not an agricultural pest in the traditional sense, as it does not affect terrestrial crops, greenhouses, or agricultural produce. Its ecological niche is strictly confined to marine environments, where it exists as a benthic filter-feeding organism.
Within the aquaculture industry, however, it is classified as a biofouling organism. Excessive growth of this sponge on shellfish farm equipment, nets, or directly on cultured oysters and mussels can decrease productivity. By competing for space and nutrients, these sponges can hinder the growth rates of valuable marine species.
The biology of the species involves both sexual reproduction and budding. The dispersal phase occurs via planktonic larvae that attach to suitable substrates. Once settled, the sponge grows rapidly, forming large, fleshy masses that can cover entire surfaces, effectively creating a physical barrier to the feeding apparatus of the cultured animals.
Mitigation strategies for aquaculture facilities focus primarily on maintenance and farm hygiene. Effective measures include frequent inspection of submerged infrastructure, mechanical removal of colonies to prevent overgrowth, and the strategic rotation of cages to areas where environmental conditions, such as salinity fluctuations or current strength, are less favorable for sponge colonization.
