Commonly referred to as an amber snail due to the appearance of its shell, this mollusk thrives in humid environments such as marshes, damp soil near water bodies, and poorly drained agricultural land. It acts as a potential pest in greenhouse production and home gardens.

These snails primarily damage young, succulent plant parts. Key targets include leafy vegetables like lettuce, spinach, cabbage, and various ornamental seedlings. By feeding on the tender epidermis and leaf tissue, they cause irregular, ragged holes, which severely inhibit plant growth and degrade the marketable quality of produce.

The biology of Succinea lauta is highly dependent on humidity levels. These snails are hermaphroditic and can reproduce rapidly in favorable conditions. They deposit egg clusters in moist soil or under organic debris. Their life cycle is relatively fast, allowing for multiple generations within a single growing season if the environment remains consistently damp and shaded.

The damage caused by these snails is characterized by jagged feeding patterns and a visible trail of dry, shimmering mucus left on the leaf surfaces. Beyond direct consumption of plant material, the presence of snails often facilitates the entry of plant pathogens, as the lesions caused by feeding wounds become entry points for various bacterial and fungal diseases, potentially leading to plant death.
