Description

Systematic position: Suillia lurida, commonly referred to as the garlic fly, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Heleomyzidae. This species is recognized as an emerging pest, particularly in the northern regions where winter garlic and onion crops are cultivated.

Host crops: The primary hosts for this fly are garlic (Allium sativum) and onions (Allium cepa). It is particularly detrimental to autumn-sown (winter) crops, as the pest remains active during lower temperature ranges when most other insect pests are dormant.

Biology and life cycle: Adult flies become active during the autumn cooling period. Females lay their eggs on the leaves or near the base of the young emerging seedlings. The larvae, upon hatching, tunnel into the stems or the developing bulbs, feeding on internal plant tissues throughout the winter and early spring.

Type of damage and economic importance: Infested plants exhibit stunted growth, yellowing, and curling of the leaves. Severe infestations often lead to the destruction of the central growing point, resulting in plant death. Furthermore, the larval feeding galleries facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, such as fungal and bacterial rots, which can devastate a crop.

Control measures: Management relies heavily on cultural practices, particularly adjusting the sowing date to ensure seedlings do not emerge during peak fly activity. Using row covers or insect nets can physically prevent egg-laying. In severe cases, systemic insecticides applied as soil or seed treatments may be necessary to minimize damage to the winter crop.
