Systematic position: The sugar beet root aphid (Pemphigus fuscicornis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. This insect is a specialized root-feeding pest that spends most of its life cycle underground. Its hidden nature makes it a significant challenge for monitoring and control within large-scale beet farming operations.

Crops and damage profile: The primary hosts for this pest include sugar beet, garden beet, and fodder beet. The aphids feed on the lateral roots, extracting essential nutrients and water from the plant. Typical symptoms of an infestation include stunted foliage growth, chlorosis, and wilting, which leads to a substantial reduction in both total root yield and overall sugar content.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Pemphigus fuscicornis is complex, involving the alternation of hosts. It overwinters as eggs on poplars (primary hosts). In the spring, winged migrants move to beet fields and secondary weed hosts. Underground, they form colonies covered in a protective white wax, which helps them survive in the soil environment and resists certain moisture-related stresses.
