Sympiesis viridula is a parasitic wasp belonging to the family Eulophidae of the order Hymenoptera. This species is widely recognized in agricultural science as an effective natural parasitoid. It plays a significant role in ecological balance by targeting various lepidopteran pests, primarily within agricultural crop systems where its hosts reside.

The primary host for this species is the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). Sympiesis viridula focuses its reproductive efforts on the larval stages of the corn borer found within corn stalks. By successfully parasitizing these larvae, the wasp acts as a crucial biological agent, helping to regulate population outbreaks without chemical intervention.

The biological cycle of this insect involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female wasp locates the tunnels created by the corn borer larvae inside the stems. After depositing eggs on or near the host, the emerging larvae feed externally on the caterpillar's body. This process ensures the death of the host as the parasitoid progresses through its developmental stages.

Regarding agricultural impact, the damage caused by the host is severe: stalk boring leads to plant lodging, disrupted nutrient flow, and increased susceptibility to fungal pathogens. Sympiesis viridula helps mitigate these damages by maintaining the pest density below the economic injury level. Without this natural control, the economic losses in corn production would be substantially higher.
