Synommatus is a genus of insects belonging to the Curculionidae family, commonly known as true weevils, within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are recognized as specialized pests that inhabit various woody and sometimes herbaceous plant species, relying on them for both nutritional requirements and developmental substrates.

This pest primarily affects diverse tree species and specific agricultural crops within its range. The most significant damage is caused by both adults and larvae, which bore into plant tissues. This feeding behavior disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, which is essential for the healthy growth and survival of the host plant.

The life cycle follows a pattern of complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults typically emerge in the spring or early summer to mate and oviposit into plant bark or stems. Upon hatching, the larvae commence internal feeding, excavating galleries that compromise the structural integrity of the plant.

The characteristic damage often includes wilting of foliage, branch dieback, and the presence of entry holes in the bark. These physical wounds serve as points of entry for secondary pathogens, such as fungi and bacteria, which can accelerate the decline of the plant, often leading to total loss of infested branches or even the entire plant.
