The Laurel leafhopper (Synophropsis lauri) is a hemipteran insect belonging to the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a significant pest specifically adapted to feeding on plants within the Lauraceae family, with the bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) being its primary host plant.

This pest is primarily found in regions where laurel is cultivated, including both outdoor orchards and greenhouses. It primarily targets the foliage of the laurel tree, which can significantly reduce the ornamental value of the plants and impede their vegetative growth if left untreated, especially in young nursery stocks.

The biology of the species follows a typical hemimetabolous cycle: eggs are inserted into plant tissues, followed by several nymphal instars that grow into winged adults. Throughout their development, both nymphs and adults use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract sap from the phloem and mesophyll of the leaves, causing structural stress to the host.

The damage caused by Synophropsis lauri is characterized by characteristic stippling or spotting on the upper surface of the leaves, where chlorophyll has been removed. Heavy infestations lead to chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature abscission. These wounds weaken the tree and may facilitate the entry of secondary pathogens, compromising the overall health of the laurel specimen.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Cultural control involves maintaining healthy, stress-free plants through proper irrigation and fertilization. If thresholds for chemical intervention are reached, systemic insecticides are the most effective solution, as they circulate within the plant tissues and target the sap-feeding nymphs directly.
