Description

The cedar wood wasp, scientifically identified as Syntexis libocedrii, is a unique insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Anaxyelidae. It is a specialized wood-boring pest that is primarily associated with trees in the Cupressaceae family.

This insect specifically targets coniferous trees that have been weakened by environmental stressors, such as wildfire damage or drought. Because of its preference for stressed timber, it is often found in areas that have recently experienced ecological disturbances, making it a key indicator of forest health.

The biology of Syntexis is characterized by a multi-year larval development cycle. Female wasps deposit eggs into the bark of susceptible trees. The resulting larvae tunnel deep into the heartwood, where they feed and develop, sheltered from predators and extreme climatic variations.

The damage caused by the cedar wood wasp involves extensive galleries excavated within the xylem. This feeding activity disrupts the vascular system of the tree, potentially leading to reduced vigor and increased susceptibility to other pathogens, ultimately resulting in the degradation of timber quality.

Control measures primarily focus on forest hygiene and silvicultural management. Removing and destroying infested or fire-damaged trees before the new generation of adults emerges is the most effective way to limit population growth. In managed nursery environments, systemic insecticides may be used during the adult flight period to prevent new infestations.
