Quills mite

Syringophilus bipectinatus is an obligate endoparasite belonging to the class Arachnida, order Trombidiformes, and family Syringophilidae. This microscopic mite specializes in colonizing the quill, the hollow base of the feather, of various avian species. It is important to note that this is a pest of poultry, not a pest of agricultural plants or crops, and it should be addressed through veterinary and biosecurity measures.

The primary hosts for this parasite include chickens, turkeys, and occasionally other domestic and wild birds. As it is strictly an avian parasite, its presence has no impact on field crops, horticultural products, or garden plants. Misidentification of this pest as a plant-related issue often leads to ineffective management attempts that do not resolve the avian health problem.

The life cycle of the quill mite is entirely completed within the feather shaft. The mites feed on the soft tissue and fluids inside the quill, progressing through egg, larval, and nymphal stages to reach adulthood. Transmission is primarily horizontal, occurring through direct physical contact between birds in a flock, which is facilitated by crowded housing conditions.

The damage caused by Syringophilus bipectinatus is characterized by the destruction of the feather structure, leading to brittleness, deformity, and premature feather loss (molting). Heavily infested birds often exhibit significant distress, constant grooming, and reduced weight gain. The resulting decline in bird health leads to economic losses for the producer due to poor feather quality and decreased productivity.
