Systole

Systole is a genus of insects belonging to the family Eurytomidae within the order Hymenoptera. Known primarily as seed wasps, these insects are significant agricultural pests that target various economically important crops. Their ability to live hidden inside developing seeds makes them particularly difficult to detect and manage.

These pests predominantly infest Apiaceae species, such as coriander, cumin, and fennel, as well as several leguminous crops. The larvae feed internally on the endosperm and embryo of the seed, effectively hollowing them out. This destruction compromises the seed's viability and drastically reduces yield quality for both planting and industrial processing.

The life cycle of the Systole is synchronized with the development of the host plant. Adult wasps lay eggs into the developing ovary or seed. The larvae then develop inside the seed, undergoing their entire growth cycle within the plant tissue. Overwintering typically occurs as mature larvae within the hollowed seeds, either remaining on the field or inside storage facilities.

Damage symptoms are often subtle until the adult wasps emerge. Before emergence, infested seeds may appear normal; however, upon close inspection during the maturation phase, characteristic exit holes become visible on the seed surface. High infestation rates can lead to substantial economic losses, frequently rendering a significant percentage of the harvest unmarketable.

Effective management strategies for controlling Systole require an integrated pest management (IPM) approach, including the following practices:

• Spatial separation of new crops from fields previously infested with the same host species.
• Use of certified, high-quality, and clean seed stock to prevent the introduction of pests to new areas.
• Thorough post-harvest tillage and removal of crop residues to destroy overwintering sites.
• Strategic timing of insecticide applications to target adult wasps before they successfully deposit eggs into the crop.
