Caraway seed wasp

Systole albipennis, commonly known as the caraway seed wasp, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eurytomidae. It is a specialized pest that specifically targets plants within the Apiaceae (umbelliferous) family, often causing significant losses to seed production.

The primary hosts for this pest include caraway, coriander, anise, and fennel. Its presence is noted in various agricultural regions where these crops are cultivated, making it a critical concern for seed farmers who need to ensure high-quality, viable yields.

The biology of this wasp is strictly aligned with the flowering stages of its host plants. The insect overwinters as a larva inside infested seeds that remain in the field after harvest or in stored seed stock. Adult wasps emerge in spring, coinciding with the flowering phase, and lay eggs inside the developing ovaries of the flowers.

The damage occurs when the larva feeds on the internal tissues of the seed, effectively hollowing it out. Since the larva develops inside the seed coat, it remains protected and difficult to detect until the seed is harvested and processed. This infestation significantly reduces both germination rates and total seed yield.
