Taenia hydatigena, commonly known as the thin-necked bladder worm, is a tapeworm species that poses a significant challenge in veterinary medicine. While not a plant pest, it directly impacts the agricultural sector by infecting livestock such as sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle, resulting in substantial economic losses for farmers.
The taxonomic classification of this parasite is as follows: Phylum Platyhelminthes, Class Cestoda, Order Cyclophyllidea, and Family Taeniidae. Understanding its classification is crucial for implementing targeted veterinary interventions and breaking the parasite's life cycle in agricultural environments.
The biology and life cycle of the parasite involve two hosts. Adult worms reside in the small intestine of definitive hosts, typically dogs and wild canids. Eggs are shed into the environment via feces. Intermediate hosts ingest these eggs while grazing, leading to the development of the larval stage, known as Cysticercus tenuicollis.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled bladders on the liver surface, mesentery, and omentum. This condition, known as tenuicollis cysticercosis, causes organ damage, poor growth rates in livestock, and the condemnation of affected organs and carcasses during meat inspection at slaughterhouses.
Control measures are vital for managing the prevalence of this parasite on farms. Effective strategies involve regular anthelmintic treatment of farm dogs, preventing dogs from accessing raw slaughterhouse offal, and maintaining high hygiene standards in areas where livestock are kept and grazed to prevent environmental contamination with eggs.
