While typically identified as a marine organism, it acts as a pest in specific agricultural environments such as coastal marshes, estuaries, and salt-affected lands where specialized crops or halophytic plants are cultivated for various industrial or agricultural purposes.

The primary damage caused by these crustaceans involves the mechanical destruction of the plant's epidermis. By attaching themselves to stems and root zones to construct their protective tubes, they disrupt the normal physiological processes of the plant. This damage serves as an entry point for various pathogens, leading to secondary fungal or bacterial infections that further weaken the host.

The biology of Tanais dulongii is characterized by a complex life cycle and a high degree of environmental plasticity. They reproduce within the protective tubes constructed from debris and their own secretions. Their ability to thrive in high-salinity conditions allows them to establish dense populations on submerged or semi-submerged vegetation, making early detection and intervention critical for crop survival.
