Description

Taxodiomyia is a genus of gall midges within the family Cecidomyiidae, order Diptera. These small flies are specialized herbivores that primarily target species within the Cupressaceae family, particularly the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum), causing specific tissue formations known as galls.

The host plants are affected primarily at the level of their needles and developing shoot tissues. The larvae feed internally within the plant tissue, which causes the tree to produce a gall. This structure serves as both a nutritional source and a protective environment for the developing larvae during their life cycle.

The biological cycle involves adults laying eggs on young foliage. Once the larvae emerge and begin feeding, the plant's physiological response leads to the enclosure of the insect within the gall tissue. Protected by this biological fortress, the larvae pass through their growth stages until they are ready to pupate and emerge as adults.

The damage caused by Taxodiomyia is easily identifiable by the presence of abnormal bulbous growth on the needles and stems.
