Cypress twig gall midge

The cypress twig gall midge (Taxodiomyia cupressiananassa) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. This specialized pest is primarily known for causing the development of peculiar woody galls on the foliage and twigs of its host plants, significantly altering their appearance.

The primary host for this insect is the bald cypress (Taxodium distichum). The midge focuses its activity on the young growth and needles, which creates a specific relationship where the plant tissues react to the larvae's presence by forming protective structures that shelter the pest throughout its development.

The life cycle of this gall midge is synchronized with the vegetative season of the cypress. Adult females deposit eggs on the needles, and upon hatching, the larvae secrete enzymes that stimulate the tree to create a gall. This growth provides the larvae with both a physical shield against predators and a steady supply of nutrients until they reach the pupal stage.

The damage caused by Taxodiomyia cupressiananassa is primarily aesthetic but can become problematic in nursery settings or ornamental landscapes. While a few galls may not kill a tree, heavy infestations lead to significant needle drop, reduced vitality, and an overall stunted growth pattern due to the disruption of normal nutrient transport.
