Taxomyia

Taxomyia is a genus of insects within the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges), belonging to the order Diptera. The most prominent species, Taxomyia taxi, is a well-known pest that specifically targets yew trees (Taxus spp.). These insects are highly host-specific, making them a primary concern for arborists and nurseries focusing on taxus species.

The biology of the yew gall midge involves a unique relationship with the host plant. Adult midges emerge in the spring to lay eggs on the newly forming buds of the yew tree. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the developing buds, causing the tree to respond by producing characteristic galls, which serve as both food and shelter for the developing larvae.

The damage caused by Taxomyia taxi is characterized by the formation of dense, artichoke-like galls on the tips of the shoots. Inside these structures, the larvae feed throughout the season. This activity prevents the normal development of needles and internodes, resulting in stunted, distorted growth that significantly impairs the tree's health and visual appearance.

The economic and aesthetic impact of this pest is significant in landscape design and ornamental horticulture. Severe infestations lead to a decline in plant vigor, leaf drop, and an open, sparse canopy. Furthermore, the stressed condition of the tree makes it more susceptible to secondary issues, such as fungal pathogens or environmental stress factors like drought.
