Yew gall midge

The yew gall midge (Taxomyia taxi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae. It is an obligate parasite of the yew tree (Taxus baccata), specifically targeting the developing buds of the plant. This pest is a common concern for arborists and gardeners responsible for maintaining healthy yew hedges and ornamental trees.

The biology of Taxomyia taxi is characterized by a precise synchronization with the host plant's growth cycle. Adult midges emerge in the spring to lay their eggs on young terminal buds. As the larvae hatch and begin feeding inside the bud, the plant reacts by producing a gall—a dense, cone-shaped cluster of modified, shortened needles that encapsulates the developing larva.

The damage caused by this midge is primarily aesthetic and structural. The formation of galls stops the apical growth of the affected shoots, resulting in stunted, deformed branches that lack the typical elegant structure of the yew. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage can significantly weaken the plant's vigor and degrade the visual appeal of landscape hedges.

Life cycle dynamics show that while many individuals complete their development in a single year, some larvae may enter an extended diapause, remaining inside the galls for up to two years. This adaptation acts as an insurance policy for the population, making it difficult to eradicate the pest completely through simple manual removal of galls in a single season.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for control. Effective measures include:

• Manual removal: Pruning and destroying infested galls before the adult insects emerge in spring.
• Chemical control: Applying systemic insecticides during the specific window of egg-laying to target the young larvae before they are fully protected by the gall tissue.
