The Tenthecoris confusus is a specialized species of mirid bug (Miridae) that acts as a serious pest for various orchid species. As a sap-sucking insect, it targets the cellular fluids of host plants, causing significant cosmetic and physiological damage. It has become a notable nuisance in greenhouses and orchid collections worldwide due to its stealthy nature.

Taxonomically, this insect belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It primarily infests epiphytic orchids, with a strong preference for Cattleya, Laelia, and related hybrids. Its ability to adapt to artificial climate conditions allows it to thrive in controlled environments, making it a persistent challenge for commercial and hobbyist growers alike.

The biology of this pest involves several nymphal stages, during which both the immature and adult forms feed on the plant. They tend to aggregate in protected areas of the plant, such as leaf axils, near the base of pseudobulbs, or on the undersides of leaves. This hidden behavior often leads to delayed detection, allowing the infestation to spread throughout a collection before signs become obvious.

Damage caused by Tenthecoris confusus is characterized by chlorotic spots and stippling on the leaves. As the bugs feed, they puncture the leaf cells, resulting in localized tissue death and discoloration, often described as a silvery or bleached appearance. Heavy infestations lead to stunted growth, leaf deformation, reduced flowering quality, and an increased risk of plant death due to weakened immunity.
