Tenuiphantes

Systematic position. Tenuiphantes is a genus of spiders belonging to the order Araneae and the family Linyphiidae. These small arachnids are commonly found in various agricultural ecosystems. While they act as generalist predators, their role changes in greenhouses or controlled environments, where their habit of building extensive webs can interfere with crop maintenance and marketability.

Crops and damage. Although Tenuiphantes are not direct phytophages, their presence poses a significant nuisance for decorative plants, seedlings, and greenhouse vegetables. The damage is primarily caused by the accumulation of dense, sticky webbing across leaves and flowers. This reduces photosynthetic efficiency, promotes the accumulation of dust and debris, and creates a humid microenvironment that favors the development of fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. These spiders prefer moist, shaded microhabitats with dense vegetation. They breed actively during the warmer months, with females depositing egg sacs in hidden areas within the plant canopy. Their ability to reproduce rapidly under stable greenhouse conditions allows populations to grow significantly in a short timeframe.

Economic impact. In commercial horticulture, the economic impact is linked to the loss of aesthetic value and the potential for secondary diseases. The presence of webbing on flowers or fruits renders the produce unsalable according to quality standards. Furthermore, the networks trap contaminants and moisture, which may facilitate the spread of secondary infections among crop plants.

Control measures. To effectively manage Tenuiphantes populations, growers should adopt integrated pest management practices:

• Maintain good sanitation practices by removing dead plant matter from greenhouses.
• Optimize humidity levels and ensure adequate air circulation to discourage spider colonization.
• Clear surrounding vegetation that may harbor populations near crop fields.
