Description

The genus Tephritis belongs to the Tephritidae family, commonly known as fruit flies or peacock flies due to their intricate wing patterns. While some members of this family are major agricultural pests of various fruits, the genus Tephritis specifically focuses on infesting the flower heads and stems of Asteraceae species. Their presence can be a significant constraint for seed production in commercial agriculture.

The biology of these insects involves a life cycle where females use a needle-like ovipositor to insert eggs into the tissues of the host plant. Upon hatching, the larvae, which are typically apodous (legless) maggots, feed internally. This protected environment shields them from many environmental stresses and predators, making them challenging to target once they have established themselves within the floral structures.
