Description

The Arnica fruit fly (Tephritis arnicae) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Tephritidae. These flies are easily recognized by the complex, lace-like patterns on their wings. They are primarily known for their impact on medicinal herb cultivation, specifically targeting plants within the Asteraceae family, most notably Arnica montana.

The larvae of this species feed exclusively within the flower heads of their host plants. By consuming the receptacle and developing seeds, the larvae severely disrupt the reproductive process of the arnica plant. This feeding behavior makes the species a significant economic concern for farmers engaged in the large-scale production of arnica for pharmaceutical purposes.

The life cycle begins when the adult female lays eggs inside the unopened flower buds. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately begin burrowing into the soft internal tissues of the flower head. The larval stage is relatively sedentary, spending its entire development protected within the host plant structure until it reaches the pupal stage, often remaining within the damaged flower head.

Visible damage caused by Tephritis arnicae includes distorted flower shapes, wilting of the floral rays, and browning of the head structure. Furthermore, the entry points created by the larvae provide easy access for secondary pathogens, leading to further decay of the crop.

Physical control methods, such as manual removal of symptomatic flower heads before larvae emerge, are highly effective. Due to the high sensitivity of medicinal crops to synthetic chemicals, preventive strategies like crop rotation and maintaining clean fields are essential to mitigate outbreaks.
