Systematic position: The burdock fruit fly (Tephritis bardanae) is a member of the Diptera order and the Tephritidae family. As a specialized pest, it has evolved to occupy a niche within the flower heads of its host plants, displaying the characteristic wing patterns typical of the fruit fly family.
Host plants: This species primarily targets plants of the genus Arctium, commonly known as burdock. While often considered a minor pest in wild habitats, it can cause significant damage in areas where burdock is cultivated for its roots or seeds for herbal medicine production.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Tephritis bardanae is closely synchronized with the flowering season of its host. Adult flies lay eggs into the developing flower buds. The larvae emerge and burrow into the flower heads to feed on the developing seeds and receptacle tissue.
