Description
Systematic position: Teredo navalis belongs to the phylum Mollusca, class Bivalvia, and family Teredinidae. Despite the common name "shipworm," this organism is a highly specialized marine bivalve mollusk that has evolved to thrive by consuming and tunneling through submerged wood.
Host materials: As a significant marine pest, it does not target traditional crops but poses a severe threat to submerged timber. It attacks piers, docks, wooden vessels, pilings, and any other wooden structures exposed to salt or brackish water environments, causing extensive economic damage to maritime infrastructure worldwide.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle begins as a microscopic planktonic larva that settles on a wooden surface. Once attached, it transforms and begins to bore into the wood using its small, rasping shells. As it matures, the shipworm elongates, creating a burrow that it lines with a calcium carbonate tube, while continuing to feed on wood fibers digested with the aid of symbiotic bacteria.
Damage and harmfulness: The most dangerous aspect of Teredo navalis is its clandestine nature. The entry holes remain tiny, while the interior of the wood is excavated until it is riddled with tunnels and loses all structural integrity. This often leads to sudden catastrophic failure of piers and piles, as the damage is hidden from view until it is far too late to repair.
Control measures: Protection strategies focus on preventing larval attachment and chemical treatment. Common methods include:
- Pressure-treating timber with copper-based preservatives or creosote.
- Encasing pilings in concrete, fiberglass, or heavy-duty plastic sleeves.
- Applying anti-fouling paints containing toxic compounds to discourage colonization.
- Regular underwater inspections to assess the integrity of submerged structures.
