Testacella

Testacella is a genus of predatory air-breathing land slugs belonging to the family Testacellidae. Unlike common garden slugs, these organisms possess a small, external ear-shaped shell located at the posterior end of their body. Their subterranean lifestyle makes them unique, as they spend most of their time beneath the soil surface actively hunting for prey.

The primary food source for Testacella is earthworms, which are essential for healthy soil structure. However, in the absence of sufficient worm populations, these slugs shift their diet toward the underground parts of plants. They frequently attack potato tubers, onion bulbs, and the roots of various ornamental and vegetable crops, causing significant physiological stress to the plants.

The life cycle of this mollusk is strictly linked to soil moisture conditions. They deposit eggs deep underground, and their population density peaks during long, wet periods. They are highly mobile within existing soil fissures and earthworm tunnels, allowing them to navigate deep into the root zone where they are protected from predators and surface-applied chemical treatments.

The damage caused by Testacella is characterized by deep, narrow cavities in tubers and roots. These open wounds serve as entry points for soil-borne pathogens, leading to secondary rot and tissue degradation. This is particularly problematic for root crops, as the infestation often remains undetected until the harvesting stage, resulting in significant quality loss.
