Description

Systematic position. The sugarbeet root maggot, Tetanops myopaeformis, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Ulidiidae. It is recognized as a primary and highly specialized pest affecting sugar beet crops worldwide, often causing substantial economic losses in regions where sugar beet is intensively cultivated.

Crops and economic impact. This insect primarily attacks sugar beets and fodder beets. The damage caused by larvae is critical, as they feed directly on the taproot. This feeding activity not only stunts plant growth but also makes the roots highly susceptible to secondary bacterial and fungal infections, leading to significant yield loss and sugar quality reduction.

Biology and life cycle. The sugarbeet root maggot completes one generation per year. Larvae overwinter deep in the soil profile. As soil temperatures rise in the spring, larvae migrate toward the surface to pupate. The adult flies emerge in late spring, coincident with the early growth stages of the sugar beet crop, and females deposit eggs in the soil near the base of the young plants.

Nature of damage. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the seedling's root system. Young plants often wilt and die if the primary root is severely damaged. In older plants, the larval tunnels manifest as scarring or deep grooves in the root surface, which reduces the crop's vigor, delays development, and makes the beets more prone to rot during harvest and storage.

Control measures. Effective management of Tetanops myopaeformis requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and deep autumn plowing to disturb overwintering larvae are fundamental. Chemical control is widely used, particularly through the application of systemic insecticides as seed treatments or granular soil insecticides applied at planting time to provide early-season protection.
