The Calamagrostis jointworm (Tetramesa calamagrostidis) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eurytomidae. Unlike many of its parasitic relatives, the larvae of this species are specialized phytophages that feed exclusively within the stems of certain grass species, leading to structural damage to the host plant.
This pest is primarily associated with grasses of the Calamagrostis genus, although it can impact various forage and cereal grasses in agricultural settings. It is often considered a minor pest, but under favorable conditions, it can cause significant stress to grassland ecosystems and cultivated hay crops.
The life cycle begins with the emergence of adults, which usually coincides with the spring growth of the host grasses. Females deposit their eggs directly into the succulent stems. The larvae develop internally, mining the tissue and disrupting the transport of water and nutrients, which eventually leads to the formation of characteristic galls or stunted growth.
Damage caused by the Calamagrostis jointworm manifests as thickened, distorted stems and failure to produce healthy seed heads. Severe infestations lead to significant yield losses, particularly in forage crops, as the affected plants become stunted and lose nutritional value. The presence of these insects is often overlooked until structural damage to the stems becomes visible.
Management strategies focus on cultural practices, such as the removal of host wild grasses from field margins and proper pasture management. Burning or deep plowing of crop residues can help reduce overwintering populations. Chemical control is rarely targeted specifically at this species but can be managed using systemic insecticides applied during the peak flight period of adult wasps.
