Webster wheat straw wasp

Tetramesa websteri

Description

The Webster wheat straw wasp (Tetramesa websteri) is a member of the Hymenoptera order and the Eurytomidae family. Unlike many other eurytomids that act as parasitoids, this species is a specialist herbivore, spending its larval stage feeding on the internal tissues of cereal stalks, causing significant physiological stress to the host plant.

The primary host for this pest is wheat. It targets both winter and spring varieties, with infestation levels often correlating with environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity during the stem elongation stage. In addition to cultivated wheat, certain wild grasses may host the pest, providing a refuge when wheat crops are not available.

The biological cycle of this insect begins in the spring when adults emerge. Females use their ovipositors to insert eggs directly into the plant stem. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the stem, feeding on the inner parenchyma and vascular tissues. This process disrupts the plant's ability to transport nutrients, particularly during the critical grain-filling phase.

Infestation damage includes weakened stems, stunted plant growth, and a significant reduction in grain weight. Because the larvae remain protected inside the stalk, visual inspection is often difficult until severe symptoms, such as premature drying of the head or lodging, become apparent across the field.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices remain the first line of defense; these include deep plowing after harvest to bury or destroy infested stubble and the rotation of wheat with non-host crops. If chemical intervention is necessary, systemic insecticides should be timed precisely to coincide with the adult emergence and mating period.

  • Deep tillage of wheat stubble.
  • Crop rotation to break the life cycle.
  • Monitoring for adult wasp activity in spring.
  • Planting resistant wheat cultivars.
