Coffee leafhopper

The coffee leafhopper Tettigella coffeacola belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a specialized insect pest that primarily impacts coffee plantations, causing economic damage by debilitating host plants through sap-feeding activities.

This pest is mainly associated with coffee plants (Coffea spp.). It thrives on the sap of young, tender leaves and stems, which acts as a vital source of nutrition for both nymphal stages and adult insects during their active development periods.

The biological cycle consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Due to their rapid reproductive capacity, these insects can quickly reach high population densities, especially during favorable warm and humid weather conditions typical of major coffee-producing regions.

The damage is characterized by chlorosis, leaf curling, and stunted growth. Prolonged feeding causes significant physiological stress to the coffee trees, which often leads to poor fruit set and reduced yields. Furthermore, the feeding wounds can act as entry points for various pathogens.

Control measures should focus on Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Key strategies include:

• Application of systemic insecticides during peak infestation periods.
• Introduction of natural predators such as parasitic wasps or ladybird beetles.
• Regular pruning of coffee trees to improve canopy airflow.
• Monitoring of weed populations in the understory that may harbor the pest.
