Coffee leafhopper

The coffee leafhopper (Tettigella coffeaphila) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a specialized pest that feeds on the sap of coffee trees. As a vascular feeder, this insect significantly impacts the vigor of the host plant, making it a subject of concern for coffee producers in tropical and subtropical growing regions.

The primary hosts for this species are various species of the Coffea genus. The leafhoppers congregate on the undersides of leaves and on tender new growth. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the phloem, they deplete the plant of essential nutrients and water, which is particularly detrimental to young seedlings and stressed trees.

The biological cycle consists of three developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. The lifecycle is highly dependent on ambient temperature and humidity levels, with warm, humid conditions accelerating development. Because they can complete multiple generations in a single year, their population density can surge rapidly if left unmanaged, leading to severe localized outbreaks.

The damage caused by Tettigella coffeaphila is twofold. Direct damage involves yellowing, chlorosis, and leaf distortion, resulting in reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Indirect damage is caused by the excretion of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking sunlight from the leaf surface. Furthermore, the species acts as a vector for various plant pathogens, potentially spreading diseases throughout the plantation.

Effective control measures require an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Early detection is paramount; producers should conduct frequent field surveys focusing on the underside of foliage. Mechanical controls include weed management to remove alternative hosts. Biological controls, such as introducing or encouraging natural predators, are recommended. If infestation levels exceed economic thresholds, the use of systemic insecticides should be implemented in strict adherence to environmental safety protocols.
