Description
The cereal fly of the genus Thaumatomyia is a member of the Chloropidae family, order Diptera. While many chloropids are known as predators of aphids, some species in this genus exhibit phytophagous habits that can lead to negative agricultural impacts when their population reaches high density in cereal crop fields.
The primary hosts of this pest include wheat, barley, oats, and various wild grasses. The larvae are the damaging stage, as they invade the stalks of young cereal plants, feeding on the inner tissues. This feeding behavior interferes with the plant’s nutrient transport and structural development.
The biological cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult flies typically deposit eggs at the base of the stems. Once the larvae emerge, they penetrate the plant tissues, moving toward the growing point or central stalk. Depending on environmental conditions, there can be multiple generations per growing season.
The damage caused by Thaumatomyia is characterized by the withering of the central leaf, yellowing of the stem, and in severe cases, the death of the shoot. Economic damage is manifested as a reduction in plant stand density and lower crop yields, as affected tillers often fail to produce fully developed ears.
