Description
The Thecabius affinis, commonly known as the poplar-lettuce aphid, belongs to the family Aphididae (order Hemiptera). This pest is characterized by its heteroxenous life cycle, meaning it requires two different host plants, specifically Populus trees and various Asteraceae species, to complete its development throughout the seasons.
The primary hosts for this aphid are poplar species, while the secondary, economically significant hosts include lettuce (Lactuca sativa). The aphid's ability to switch hosts allows it to survive harsh conditions and exploit different resources during the growing season.
Biologically, the cycle initiates in spring with eggs overwintering on poplar bark. The emerging stem mothers induce leaf galls. Later, winged offspring migrate to lettuce roots or leaf bases. There, they undergo rapid parthenogenetic reproduction, forming dense colonies that extract vital nutrients from the host plant.
The damage caused by Thecabius affinis is severe. On poplars, it causes conspicuous leaf galls and yellowing. On lettuce, the infestation of root systems leads to stunted growth, wilting, and reduced market value. In addition, these aphids can weaken the plant, making it more susceptible to opportunistic soil-borne diseases.
Effective management strategies include cultural controls, such as crop rotation and the spatial separation of lettuce fields from poplar stands. Chemical control is often necessary during the migration period, using systemic insecticides. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices, including biological control by natural predators, are encouraged to keep populations below economic thresholds.
