Description

The pine needle gall midge (Thecodiplosis brachyntera) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. This insect is a specialized pest that significantly impacts pine species, particularly in managed forests and nurseries across various regions.

The primary host for this pest is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). The insect shows a strong preference for younger trees, which are more vulnerable to the physiological stress caused by the larval development inside the pine needles.

The life cycle consists of one generation per year. Adult midges emerge in late spring to mate and lay eggs at the base of newly developing needles. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the needle tissue, inducing gall formation, which provides shelter and nourishment while the larvae continue their development until the following spring.

Damage is characterized by stunted, twisted, and discolored needles. The gall formation at the base of the needle bundle eventually leads to premature needle drop.
