Description

Systematic position. The Monterey pine gall midge (Thecodiplosis piniradiatae) belongs to the order Diptera, family Cecidomyiidae. It is a specialized gall-inducing insect that affects the needles of pine trees, significantly impacting their physiological health.

Host range. The primary host for this pest is the Monterey pine (Pinus radiata). However, it is known to infest other pine species, particularly in areas where these trees are introduced as part of silviculture or ornamental landscaping.

Biology and lifecycle. The life cycle is synchronized with the growth of pine needles. Female midges lay eggs at the base of young needles. The developing larvae tunnel into the tissue, triggering the host plant to produce a gall. Within these protective structures, the larvae complete their development, pupate, and emerge as adults, often completing one or more generations per year depending on climatic conditions.

Damage and economic impact. The characteristic symptoms include swelling at the base of the needles, which inhibits the transport of nutrients and water.
