Feathered Gothic moth

The Feathered Gothic moth (Tholera popularis) is a species of moth belonging to the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as a potential agricultural pest, as its larvae feed on a variety of grasses and cereal crops. Its distribution spans across various climatic zones, making it a recurring concern for grain producers.

This pest primarily affects cereals such as wheat, barley, and oats. It also thrives on various perennial grasses often found on field margins or pastures. When environmental conditions favor the development of the larvae, they can cause widespread defoliation, significantly impacting the vegetative vigor of the host plants.

The life cycle of Tholera popularis is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, typically laid in the soil or at the base of host plants. Larvae emerge in the spring, coinciding with the early growth stages of cereal crops. They feed actively through the spring and early summer before pupating in the soil.

The damage caused by larvae is primarily nocturnal. They skeletonize or completely consume leaves, starting from the edges or the tips. In severe cases, the larvae can prune the plants near the ground, leading to patchy stands and reduced yields. Because they remain hidden in the soil debris during the day, damage can go unnoticed until it becomes significant.

Effective management strategies should focus on preventive measures and targeted interventions:

• Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the life cycle of the moth.
• Cultivating the soil (plowing) in late autumn to expose eggs to harsh conditions and predators.
• Regular field scouting to monitor larval presence during the critical stages of plant development.
• Applying chemical control measures only when the economic threshold of infestation is exceeded.
