African sacred ibis

The African sacred ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) is a large wading bird belonging to the Threskiornithidae family within the Pelecaniformes order. While native to sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Iraq, it has become a significant invasive species in various European regions, where it frequently interacts with and causes damage to agricultural operations.

The biology of the sacred ibis is marked by extreme adaptability and opportunistic feeding habits. They are highly efficient at exploiting human-modified landscapes, including farmland. Their life cycle revolves around colonial nesting, and in the absence of natural predators in invaded regions, their populations can expand rapidly, placing significant pressure on local crop production.

The damage caused by these birds is primarily linked to the destruction of crops. Sacred ibises are known to forage on fields containing cereals, vegetables, and fodder crops. Furthermore, the accumulation of their excrement in fields and irrigation ponds raises concerns regarding soil contamination and the potential spread of pathogens to other livestock or domestic animals.

Damage patterns typically involve the trampling of seedlings and the consumption of seeds or ripening produce. Because they forage in large flocks, a single group can cause substantial economic losses to a field in a very short period. This activity is particularly problematic during the early growth stages of plants or just prior to the harvest period.

Control measures for the sacred ibis focus on integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. This includes the deployment of acoustic and visual repellents to deter birds from landing on fields. Protective netting for smaller or high-value crops is often effective. In areas where populations have become critical, government-led management programs focusing on population regulation are often necessary to protect food security.
