Systematic position: The golden twin-spot moth (Thysanoplusia orichalcea) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its adaptability and ability to cause economic losses in various cropping systems across different climatic zones.

Host crops: This pest has a wide range of host plants, demonstrating a preference for leguminous crops like soybeans, peas, and alfalfa. Additionally, it attacks various vegetables, including potatoes, tomatoes, brassicas, and sunflowers, often causing severe defoliation across large agricultural fields.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Eggs are laid on the undersides of leaves. After hatching, the larvae undergo several instars, feeding voraciously on foliage. Pupation occurs within a silken cocoon attached to the host plant or debris, followed by the emergence of the adult moth, which completes the cycle.

Damage and economic impact: Larvae are the primary cause of damage. Younger larvae skeletonize leaves, whereas older stages consume large irregular holes, eventually destroying the entire leaf blade and leaving only the midribs. Severe infestation causes significant yield loss by reducing the plant's capacity for photosynthesis, thereby stunting growth and reducing seed weight.

Control measures: Management of this pest requires an integrated approach to maintain population levels below economic thresholds.
