Tibiomus

Tibiomus (lat. Tibiomus) is a genus of beetles belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). These insects are known in agricultural sectors for their specific feeding habits, which target the vascular and vegetative tissues of various plants. As a pest, they require diligent monitoring due to their ability to adapt to different climatic zones and host plants.

The host range of Tibiomus includes various agricultural and ornamental crops. The pest is particularly attracted to succulent plant tissues, focusing its damage on leaves, buds, and young stems. Because of their small size and cryptic behavior, they are often overlooked until significant visual damage appears on the field, leading to potential economic losses for farmers.

The biology of Tibiomus is characterized by complete metamorphosis. Adult beetles typically overwinter in sheltered environments such as plant debris or the soil. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and reproduce. The larvae are the most destructive stage, often boring into plant tissues to feed, which makes them difficult to target with conventional surface-applied insecticides.

Damage caused by this pest is twofold. Adults typically engage in leaf-notching, which reduces the surface area available for photosynthesis. Conversely, larval activity inside stems compromises the structural integrity of the plant and blocks the transport of water and nutrients, resulting in stunted growth, yellowing (chlorosis), and in severe cases, the death of the affected plant.

To manage Tibiomus populations effectively, agronomists recommend a combination of preventive and curative strategies:

• Implementing strict crop rotation protocols to break the pest life cycle.
• Removing crop residues after harvest to eliminate overwintering sites.
• Monitoring pest density using sticky traps or pheromone baits.
• Applying systemic insecticides during periods of peak larval emergence.
• Encouraging natural predators and parasitoids within the agroecosystem.
