Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) belongs to the Cichlidae family, order Perciformes. Originally recognized under the name Tilapia nilotica, this species is widely known in aquaculture, but in open field agriculture, it acts as an invasive pest that disrupts the balance of irrigation systems and rice paddies.
The primary crops affected by Nile tilapia are young rice plants. During their feeding cycle, these fish engage in bottom-dwelling behavior, digging through the mud. This action uproots newly germinated rice seeds and seedlings, causing significant gaps in the crops and requiring costly re-sowing efforts.
The biology of the Nile tilapia is characterized by extreme resilience and high reproductive rates. They are opportunistic feeders, consuming detritus, phytoplankton, and aquatic plants. Their oral brooding behavior ensures that a large percentage of offspring survive, leading to rapid population explosions in canal systems.
Their destructiveness is observed through increased water turbidity and physical damage to underwater root systems. Beyond direct crop damage, the disturbance of the substrate alters the nutrient balance in the water, which can negatively impact the yield quality in agricultural hydroponic and irrigation-fed systems.
Protection strategies primarily involve the installation of fine-mesh screening at all water intake points to prevent the entry of fry and adults into agricultural fields. Effective management also includes the strategic drying of irrigation channels and monitoring the spread of the species in drainage networks.
