Tiliacea moth

The Tiliacea genus consists of moths belonging to the family Noctuidae. These insects are recognized as pests in orchards and deciduous forests. While they are often associated with linden trees, they frequently infest common fruit-bearing species like apple and pear trees, where they cause localized but significant damage to early season growth.

From a biological standpoint, the life cycle of Tiliacea is univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. The eggs overwinter on the bark of host trees. As spring temperatures rise, the hatching larvae emerge precisely when the buds begin to burst, timing their feeding activity to coincide with the most vulnerable state of the tree's development.

The larvae are voracious eaters, primarily targeting young leaves, floral buds, and developing fruitlets. By consuming these vital plant parts, they disrupt the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis and limit the production of fruits. If left unmanaged, a high population of these larvae can lead to stunted growth and loss of harvest.

Identifying an infestation is crucial. Growers should look for signs of skeletonized leaves or buds that fail to open, appearing hollowed out. Since the larvae are often active at night and hide during the day, visual inspection should be conducted at various times, or by checking for frass (larval droppings) near the base of the branches.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach:

• Applying dormant oils in early spring to suppress overwintering eggs.
• Using contact or systemic insecticides during the early larval stage if thresholds are exceeded.
• Implementing biological controls, such as introducing predatory insects.
• Monitoring populations with pheromone traps to time treatments correctly.
• Removing debris and pruning infested branches to reduce the overwintering population.
