The Tench (Latin: Tinca tinca) is a freshwater fish species belonging to the Cyprinidae family. In the context of intensive pond aquaculture, the tench is frequently viewed as a secondary species or a competitor. While not a pest in the botanical sense, its presence in managed environments can negatively impact the growth rates of primary commercial fish species.

Taxonomically, the tench is classified within the order Cypriniformes. It is a slow-moving, bottom-dwelling fish known for its thick, mucus-covered skin and small scales. This biological adaptation allows the tench to survive in stagnant, low-oxygen water where other fish species would perish, making it highly competitive in degraded habitats.

The primary harm caused by the tench in a fish farming environment is resource competition. As a benthic feeder, it consumes large quantities of chironomid larvae, mollusks, and crustaceans. By foraging extensively on the pond bottom, the tench depletes the natural food supply intended for carp or other high-value fish, thereby hindering their development.

The lifecycle of the tench is synchronized with high summer temperatures. Spawning occurs in batches among dense aquatic vegetation. Given the species' high reproductive capacity and the relative survival rate of the fry in vegetated areas, populations can quickly explode if the water body is not properly managed, leading to overcrowding and food shortages.

Management and control strategies involve integrated pond maintenance. Effective measures include the mechanical removal of tench using specialized nets, maintaining proper vegetation levels to limit spawning substrates, and seasonal pond drainage followed by liming and disinfection.
