Cocoa caterpillar

The cocoa caterpillar (Tiracola plagiata) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. Known primarily for its destructive impact on cocoa plantations, it is a polyphagous insect capable of causing severe defoliation across a wide variety of plant hosts in tropical and subtropical regions.

The host range of Tiracola plagiata is extensive, making it a persistent challenge for farmers. In addition to cocoa trees, this pest frequently attacks bananas, coffee plants, oil palms, and various broad-leaved weeds. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in diverse environments, often moving from native host plants to cultivated crops.

The biology of the pest follows a complete metamorphosis cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The moths are nocturnal, and females lay clusters of eggs on the foliage. The larvae progress through several instars, feeding voraciously. A key survival trait of the larvae is their habit of hiding in the leaf litter or shallow soil during the day, which protects them from predators and direct chemical exposure.

The damage caused by Tiracola plagiata is primarily characterized by extensive defoliation. Larvae consume leaf tissue between the veins or devour the entire leaf, leaving only the midrib. In severe infestations, an entire nursery or mature stand can be defoliated in a matter of days, leading to stunted development, significant loss of yield, and, in young plants, potential mortality.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for controlling this pest include:

• Regular field scouting to identify egg clusters and early-stage larvae.
• Manual removal of larvae in small-scale farming operations.
• Application of microbial insecticides, such as formulations containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
