The aphids congregate on the current year's shoots and needles, where they feed by inserting their stylets into the plant tissues. This direct feeding leads to the removal of essential nutrients that the tree requires for healthy development and growth.

The life cycle of this pest is highly synchronized with the growth stages of its host. The aphid typically overwinters in the egg stage, attached to needles or bark. As temperatures rise in spring, the eggs hatch into fundatrices, which initiate rapid population growth through parthenogenesis. Multiple generations follow throughout the summer, peaking before the cooler autumn temperatures trigger the production of sexual individuals for overwintering.

Damage caused by this aphid is manifested through chlorosis, needle distortion, and premature needle drop. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage and blocks sunlight, thereby inhibiting photosynthesis. Heavy infestations can significantly stunt the growth of young firs and make them susceptible to other secondary pathogens.
