Variegated spittlebug

Tomaspis pictipennis is a significant insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cercopidae. Commonly referred to as a type of spittlebug, this species is notorious for causing substantial damage to pastures and commercial crops, particularly in warm, humid climates where its populations can thrive uncontrollably.

The pest primarily targets forage grasses and sugarcane. Both nymphs and adults feed on the plant phloem sap using their piercing-sucking mouthparts. This feeding mechanism directly impacts the plant's vascular system, causing stunted growth, chlorosis, and, in severe infestations, the death of the plant tissue.

The life cycle of the spittlebug is distinct, with nymphs famously producing a frothy, spittle-like substance around their bodies. This foam serves a dual purpose: it protects the developing nymphs from desiccation in the sun and acts as a physical barrier against predators and parasites present in the field environment.

Damage symptoms are often visible as yellowing or browning of the leaves and stems. As the insect extracts nutrients, the plants lose their vigor, which translates into lower biomass production. During peak infestation, agricultural producers experience a dramatic decline in forage quality, affecting the livestock industry that depends on these pastures.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Tomaspis pictipennis. This includes the application of biological control agents such as the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae, which is highly effective against nymphs. Additionally, managing field moisture and regular monitoring help in deciding when chemical intervention is necessary to prevent economic thresholds from being exceeded.
