Systematic position and classification. The pest Tomaspis spectabilis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cercopidae. Often referred to as a species of spittlebug, this insect is recognized as a major economic threat to agricultural systems, particularly in tropical regions where it causes severe damage to both industrial crops and forage lands.

Host plants and distribution. The primary hosts of this species include sugarcane and various pasture grasses, most notably species of the genus Brachiaria. Given their high reproductive capacity, these insects can rapidly colonize large areas, making them a persistent problem for livestock farmers who rely on high-quality forage production.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Tomaspis spectabilis is highly synchronized with rainfall patterns. Eggs are laid in the soil or plant tissues, and upon hatching, nymphs immediately begin producing a characteristic froth or "spittle." This protective foam protects the nymphs from desiccation, predators, and environmental fluctuations while they feed on the xylem sap of the host plant.

Damage patterns and economic impact. Both nymphs and adults extract vital nutrients from the host plant's xylem. The injection of toxic saliva during feeding causes the characteristic "burning" or necrosis of the leaf blades. This physiological stress reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in stunted growth, decreased biomass, and a significant loss in sugar content or nutrient density.

Management and control practices. Effective management requires a combination of strategies to suppress population density effectively:
