Torpedo nematode

The Torpedo nematode (genus Torpedo) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the class of phytoparasitic nematodes. These soil-borne organisms feed exclusively on plant roots using their specialized stylets to pierce cell walls and consume the cytoplasm, which fundamentally compromises the health of the plant host.

From a taxonomic perspective, the genus is classified within the order Tylenchida and the family Hoplolaimidae. These nematodes are highly adapted to the interstitial spaces of the soil, moving efficiently to reach the roots of their targets. Their biology is characterized by a rapid life cycle that allows them to multiply quickly when favorable environmental conditions, such as warm, moist soil, are met.

This pest affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including cereals, potatoes, and various vegetable varieties. Because they live underground, the infestation is often not detected until the crop begins to show significant signs of decline, such as yellowing, stunted growth, or failure to produce adequate yields during the main growth season.

The damage caused by Torpedo includes not only direct nutrient loss but also the creation of entry points for secondary soil-borne pathogens. This dual attack weakens the plant's structural integrity and its ability to absorb water, frequently leading to localized areas of dying plants within a field, often mistaken for irrigation or nutritional deficiencies.
