Torymus sinensis is a parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Torymidae. While often categorized in the context of pest management literature, it is essentially a highly effective biocontrol agent used globally to regulate the population of invasive chestnut pests.

The primary host for this species is the oriental chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus), which poses a severe threat to Castanea sativa plantations. By forming galls on buds and young shoots, the gall wasp prevents proper tree development, which is why Torymus sinensis is introduced to manage these infestations.

The biological cycle of the wasp is tightly synchronized with its host. The female uses her long ovipositor to insert eggs into the galls. The emerging Torymus sinensis larva develops inside the gall, feeding on the gall wasp larva, effectively killing the pest before it can emerge as an adult.

The impact of this species on plant health is beneficial. It is considered the most significant natural enemy of the chestnut gall wasp. However, the introduction of this parasitoid must be managed carefully to ensure it does not negatively interfere with local native parasitoid populations already existing in the region.
