Trachelas

Trachelas is a genus of spiders belonging to the family Trachelidae. These spiders are commonly found in gardens, orchards, and vineyards throughout various temperate and subtropical regions. Known as broad-faced sac spiders, they are primarily nocturnal hunters that seek refuge in tight spaces during the day.

Taxonomically, they are classified under the order Araneae and the family Trachelidae. Unlike web-building spiders, Trachelas species are free-roaming predators. They possess strong chelicerae, which allow them to prey on a wide range of small insects, occasionally showing an interest in plant tissues or fruit surfaces when seeking shelter.

The economic impact of these spiders is usually considered secondary, but they can be a nuisance in horticultural settings. They often occupy grape clusters, which can interfere with harvesting processes and lower the overall quality of harvested fruit. Their presence may also facilitate secondary rot infections if they damage the protective skin of the ripening produce.

The life cycle of Trachelas includes overwintering as adults, usually hidden in crevices, under bark, or within man-made structures. In spring, females lay eggs inside silken sacs, which they guard until the spiderlings hatch. The juveniles undergo several molts before reaching maturity, with population numbers peaking in late summer as prey availability increases.

Effective management strategies focus on habitat modification rather than chemical intervention. Recommended practices include:

• Removing debris, dead bark, and weeds from the orchard or vineyard floor to eliminate potential nesting sites.
• Pruning lower branches to reduce the interface between soil and canopy.
• Using integrated pest management (IPM) to encourage natural predators, such as birds and beneficial insects, which keep spider populations in check.
• Conducting regular field inspections to ensure that infestations do not reach levels that compromise harvest logistics.
