Trama

Trama (Latin: Trama) is a specialized genus of aphids belonging to the family Aphididae. Unlike most leaf-dwelling species, members of this genus lead a primarily subterranean lifestyle, living in the root zone of plants or within ant nests, maintaining a symbiotic relationship with ants.

These insects primarily infest perennial plants, including wild grasses and certain cultivated species, particularly within the Asteraceae family. The pest is most frequently encountered on plant roots in greenhouse conditions or in the root zones of gardens where the soil is loose enough to allow the colonies to migrate.

The biology of Trama is closely linked to ants. The aphids secrete honeydew, which serves as a food source for ants; in return, the ants transport the aphids between roots and protect them from predators. Their life cycle includes parthenogenetic reproduction, allowing colonies to rapidly colonize the host plant's root system during the growing season.

Damage patterns manifest as stunted plant growth, yellowing leaves, and reduced overall yield, symptoms which are often misattributed to nutrient deficiencies or water stress. Root damage suppresses the plant's immune system, leaving it susceptible to secondary fungal and bacterial infections that develop at the sites of tissue puncture.

Protection measures include a comprehensive approach:

• Systematic soil cultivation to disrupt ant galleries and pathways;
• Application of contact-systemic insecticides designed for soil drenching;
• Use of biological control methods, such as natural enemies specializing in root pests;
• Implementation of crop rotation to break the insect's life cycle.
